The MESSENGERTM DM-0832-06C from Babcock is a plasma display subsystem with character fields of 8 lines of 32 characters. The use of plasma technology provides a bright (65 fL typical) neon-orange display, with a wide 130 degree viewing angle. The display's characters are formed by using a 5x7 matrix of dots. This format allows for the representation of the 64-character ASCII font consisting of upper case alphabetic characters, as well as numerals, punctuation, and commonly used scientific symbols.
The hardware design includes high voltage anode and cathode drivers. The DM-0832-06C subsystem incorporates an on-board DC-DC converter which simplifies the interface requirements. Also included is a microprocessor-controller which serves display refresh and character input, and implements editing commands.
The display subsystem is interfaced to the host system over a TTL level data Bus. ASCII character data can be written to the subsystem, and busy status can be read by the host for maximum loading speed. The DM-0832-06C is a cost-effective way of displaying up to 256 characters and is backed by a one year limited warranty and Babcock's commitment to design innovation and high quality.

Functional Description / Parallel Subsystem Input |
| |
Character Write
Sequential character loading is accomplished by presenting six bits of parallel data plus Underbar (positive true) and Blink (negative true) onto the input Bus while the Reset and Load are held high. While the character data is valid, the rising edge of the strobe pulse loads the character into the present position and increments the internal pointer to the next sequential location. The Ready line goes low during the input operation and the rising edge of the Ready line indicates that the system is ready to accept the next input.
| |
Address Load
Characters may be entered in a non-sequential mode by setting up the eight address Bit (00 through FF Hex) and pulling low on the Load input while Reset is high and Strobe is held low. The Ready line will go low as in character entry and a character may be written to the selected location as soon as Ready returns high.

Character Underline
A character, group of characters, or a space, may be underlined by applying a high to the underbar input as each character or space is loaded into memory.
| |
Character Blink
Blinking of a character or group of characters may be accomplished by applying a low to the Blink input line while the character is loaded into memory. If blinking is desired, a clock input (2 Hz typical) is required on the Blink Clock input line (low true).
| |
System Reset
Upon application of a low going pulse to the Reset input, the microprocessor will clear out all of the contents of the display memory and reset the internal character pointer to the upper leftmost position on the screen.
| |
Self Test
Adjacent to the microprocessor is a two pin header marked J1. By applying a short across these two pins the microprocessor will sequentially write all of the characters in the font onto the screen. Half of the character set will blink during the self test if the external blink clock is applied to the system at this time.
| |
Blanking
By applying a low input level to the Blank input line, the display system will turn the panel off for a low power standby mode. Information displayed on the panel will not be lost or erased while operating in this mode and will return to the screen when the input level returns high.
| |
Ready Output
The Ready line is an output from the subsystem to provide handshaking with the host system. This line is normally high and will pulse low when either a character or address is written to the system. When the ready line returns high, another character or address may be entered.

Limited Warranty
All Babcock MESSENGER Displays have a one year limited warranty. Disassembly of the product will void the warranty. Damaged displays should be returned to the factory for analysis. Contact the factory for further details.
